Pensacola Opera presented the Florida premiere of the contemporary opera, “Dead Man Walking” which is based on Sr. Helen Prejean’s book of the same name at Saenger Theatre on March 17 and 19, 2017. Written by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Terrence McNally, the opera made its debut in 2000 at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. It recounts the story of her becoming spiritual director to a man on death row and how that led her into a vocation of activism.  Patrick Jacobs portrayed George Benton, the prison warden of Angola State Prison. The opera “Dead Man Walking” has toured nationwide and made its way to Australia and Europe, receiving critical acclaim and packing houses worldwide.
